HSK 2 Quiz

HSK 2 vocabulary leans on connectors and time markers that are easy to recognize while reading but surprisingly hard to produce on the spot. This quiz flips between recognition and recall to catch that gap.

What the quiz tests

Questions run both ways — Chinese to English and English to Chinese — and stay within the HSK 2 list, so nothing requires vocabulary you haven't studied yet. Because several HSK 2 words (因为/所以, 虽然/但是-style pairs) only make sense together, some questions ask you to recall the matching word of a pair rather than a plain translation.

The most common mistake at this level

Mixing up 还是 (háishi) and 或者 (huòzhě), both meaning "or". 还是 is used in a question or a choice being made right now (你要茶还是咖啡?— "do you want tea or coffee?"); 或者 is used in a statement, outside a question (你可以喝茶或者咖啡 — "you can drink tea or coffee"). The quiz deliberately pulls from both to check that this question/statement reflex is solid, not just the word's meaning.

Where this fits in your practice

If you're not sure whether you're ready for this quiz, start with the HSK 2 vocabulary list first — the quiz assumes you've at least skimmed the words once. Missed words get flagged and resurface sooner in later sessions via spaced repetition, instead of getting buried in the full list again.

Frequently asked questions

How many words does this quiz cover?

The 200 official words introduced at HSK 2, bringing the cumulative vocabulary to 500 words.

Do I need to already know the vocabulary before taking this quiz?

Ideally yes: this quiz assumes the HSK 2 list has already been skimmed at least once.

Does this quiz also test tones?

Not specifically — it tests recognition of meaning and character/pinyin, not tones.

Why do some questions ask me to complete a word pair (虽然...但是) instead of a plain translation?

Because learning 虽然 without knowing it calls for 但是 later in the sentence leaves the skill half-learned.
