HSK 3 · Quiz
HSK 3 vocabulary leans on nuance (不但/而且) and more abstract words than earlier levels. This quiz flips between recognition and recall, both ways, to check these words are truly acquired — not just recognizable on sight.
Questions run both ways — Chinese to English and English to Chinese — and stay within the HSK 3 list, so nothing requires vocabulary you haven't studied yet. Some words (like 不但/而且) only make full sense as a pair: certain questions ask you to recall the matching word rather than a plain isolated translation.
Starting a sentence with 不但 and forgetting to close it with 而且. In English, "not only" can sometimes be left implied if context is clear; in Chinese, both halves of the pair are almost always required — a sentence that stops after 不但 sounds unfinished to a native speaker, not just stylistically different.

If you're not sure whether you're ready for this quiz, start with the HSK 3 vocabulary list first — the quiz assumes you've at least skimmed the words once. Missed words get flagged and resurface sooner in later sessions via spaced repetition, instead of getting buried in the full list again.
How many words does this quiz cover?
The 500 official words introduced at HSK 3, bringing the cumulative vocabulary to 1000 words.
Do I need to already know the vocabulary before taking this quiz?
Ideally yes: this quiz assumes the HSK 3 list has already been skimmed at least once.
Does this quiz test only vocabulary, or grammar too?
A bit of both: pairs like 不但...而且... are as much a grammar point as a vocabulary one.
Does this quiz also test tones?
Not specifically — it tests recognition of meaning and character/pinyin, not tones.
