HSK 4 Quiz

HSK 4 vocabulary is full of two-syllable verbs that sound and look alike (适应, 应付, 应该...), easy to mix up on a quick read. This quiz flips between recognition and recall, both ways, to make sure each word is genuinely distinct in your memory.

What the quiz tests

Questions run both ways — Chinese to English and English to Chinese — and stay within the HSK 4 list, so nothing requires vocabulary you haven't studied yet. Special attention goes to words that look or sound similar, a classic trap at this level.

The most common mistake at this level

Mixing up 适应 (shìyìng, "to adapt to") and 应该 (yīnggāi, "should"/"ought to"): both share the character 应, sound similar, and are often learned days apart. The meanings have nothing in common, though — one describes a process of adjustment, the other an obligation. The quiz deliberately mixes them to break the visual autopilot.

Frequently asked questions

How many words does this quiz cover?

The 1000 official words introduced at HSK 4, bringing the cumulative vocabulary to 2000 words.

Ideally yes: this quiz assumes the HSK 4 list has already been skimmed at least once.

Can this quiz really help tell apart words as close as 适应, 应付 and 应该?

That's exactly the point: seeing them mixed together with instant feedback breaks the pattern-matching autopilot.

Does this quiz also test tones?

Not specifically — it tests recognition of meaning and character/pinyin, not tones.
