HSK 6 · Quiz
HSK 6 vocabulary is the most demanding of the 1-6 scale: abstract concepts, mechanisms, fine nuances between close words. This quiz flips between recognition and recall, both ways, to consolidate this final tier before native-level fluency.
Questions run both ways — Chinese to English and English to Chinese — and stay within the HSK 6 list, so nothing requires vocabulary you haven't studied yet. Many words at this level differ more in register (formal, journalistic) than in radically different meaning: the quiz helps pin them down precisely.
Using a literary HSK 6 word (机制, 涉及, 巩固...) in an otherwise very casual sentence. These words mostly come from writing — news, reports, essays — and sound artificial or overly formal in relaxed conversation, similar to dropping a very formal English word into a chat with friends. Knowing the translation isn't enough at this level: you also need a feel for which context the word actually belongs in.

If you're not sure whether you're ready for this quiz, start with the HSK 6 vocabulary list first — the quiz assumes you've at least skimmed the words once. Missed words get flagged and resurface sooner in later sessions via spaced repetition.
How many words does this quiz cover?
The 1800 official words introduced at HSK 6, bringing the cumulative vocabulary to 5400 words — the final tier of the 1-6 scale.
Do I need to already know the vocabulary before taking this quiz?
Ideally yes: this quiz assumes the HSK 6 list has already been skimmed at least once.
Why do some HSK 6 words feel too formal for a normal conversation?
Because they mostly come from writing (news, reports, essays) rather than everyday speech — see the panel above.
Does this quiz also test tones?
Not specifically — it tests recognition of meaning and character/pinyin, not tones.
